Pregnancy aborted due to Edwards Syndrome.

Hello doctor, I am 25 years old. My naturally conceived pregnancy was terminated at 4 months. Post abortion I was suggested to undergo genetic tests since my child was detected with Hydrops Fetalis. The reason for this condition was presence of an addition chromosome 18 in the baby which is also known as Edwards Syndrome. My karyotype was Normal but my husband’s karyotype is Inv(9)(p11q13).

I wanted to know whether my second baby will have the same defects? Should I undergo IVF or TEST TUBE Procedure to have a healthy child? After how long can I plan for my second pregnancy since my abortion was done on 20th July 2015. Please Advice.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
Anyone can have a baby with Edwards' or Patau's syndromes. In most cases these conditions do not run in the family. It is not the result of anything you did or did not do. The chance of having a baby with Edwards' or Patau's syndromes increases with age, so older mothers will have a higher chance of having a baby with these conditions. A screening test for Down's, Edwards' and Patau's syndromes is available between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It is called the combined test because it combines an ultrasound scan with a blood test.
The method of conception (natural or artificial) doesn't change the chromosome pattern. You have to give a gap of atleast 3 month before planning next pregnancy. And you should start folic acid 3 months preconception.

      • Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.

As from your history, there are various causes of hydrops fetal in the baby and your baby had Edwards syndrome. Your husband's result showing this result may not be associated with adverse outcomes in next pregnancy. Don't worry and you can start Folic acid tablets 5 mg daily from 3 months before conception.
Various preparations are available in the market or you can ask your doctor to prescribe this to you.
