Nasal Odor

Hi, I have problem of Nasal Odor, Post Nasal Drip & Halitosis since past two years. Earlier about 2 years ago, i only had breath but as time passed by, smell started to come from my nose too. The smell is always coming from my nose as i normally breath out through my nose. Since my past two years, i have been to about 3 ENTs, 3 Dentists, 1 Gastroenterologist.

All of them had no solution to my problem. My CT Scan shows that my sinuses are clear, endoscopy of my nostrils also came clear. Dentists have confirmed that there is no problem with my gums or teeth. I took Levocitrizine Dihydrochloride & Montelukast Sodium for more than a month and Acid Reflux capsules for more than 3 months but still nothing improved.
Although i would like to bring to your notice that after taking only single capsule of Probiotics on night, next day in the morning my Bad breath was completely gone. But nasal odor was still present, although bad breath came back within 4 days. In desperation i have gone to many specialist doctors but none have been able to help. I came here with my problem.

I want to know what is going on with my body or where should i go next? Please any help. Thank You.

  1. Hi Anilkumar, thank you for posting your query on Medimetry.
Looking at your symptoms, there can be two possibilities for the foul smell coming from the nose and throat.

1.)Post Nasal Drip – is a runny discharge coming from the nose.

The discharge comes from the excessive mucus which goes down your throat.

Bacteria multiply and grow in this ambient causing bad smell from the mouth and nose.

In your case, following might be causative factors:

Changing weather, cold temperatures, or really dry air,Certain foods (very sweet food and bakery products increase mucus production),Fumes from chemicals, perfumes, cleaning products, smoke, or other irritants

The treatment is focused on the cause of the post nasal drip.

Another option is to thin your mucus. A simple way to thin it out is to drink more water.

Other methods you can try include:

Take a mucolytic medication such as guaifenesin .

Use saline nasal sprays or irrigation, like a neti pot, to flush mucus, bacteria, allergens, and other irritating things out of the sinuses.

Turn on a vaporizer or humidifier to increase the moisture in the air.

Hot soup, or any hot liquid might give you some temporary relief and comfort. It works because the steam from the hot liquid opens up your stuffy nose and throat. It also thins out mucus.

2.)Ozena – is also known as atrophic rhinitis.

It is a chronic infection of the nasal mucosa leading to the atrophy(thinning) of the nasal mucosa, nasal bones and the nerves that supply the nose. It may spread to the pharynx.

The smell that comes from the nose in cases of suffering from ozena is very unpleasant.

Saline nasal spray and 25 % Glucose in Glycerine nasal solution will help in such a case.
Hops this answers your question.Take care.
