Moving fetus on lying right. Suggest ideal position.

Hello doctor, I am 28 weeks pregnant, USG says that placenta is fundal and left lateral. What is the ideal position to lie down? If I lie on left lateral, will it disturb placenta or will it impair placental circulation. Moreover I can’t lie on left side for longer time because of left breast pain. But if I lie on right side, i have moving fetus continuously. It’s not stopping unless I turn, i am little comfortable with lying straightly. So what is the ideal position to lie down?

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.

Sleeping on the back is associated with a disruption in normal breathing patterns. Lying flat on the back during late pregnancy can reduce the mother’s cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped out from the heart with each heartbeat). This is because the major veins in the body that return blood to the heart (the vena cavae) are positioned just to the right side of the centre of the body. As such, it is possible that in heavily pregnant women, the pressure of the baby when lying flat or just to the right could interrupt the return of blood to the heart. This could reduce the mother’s cardiac output and, in turn, affect blood supply to the uterus .so rest in left lateral position , increases oxygen and blood supply to the fetus .
