29 weeks pregnant. I have low lying placenta (Placenta previa)

I m 29 week pregnant. In my recent ultrasound doctor said to me that i have low lying placenta at 35 mm. What does it mean? Will there be any problem in delivery?

Can I have normal delivery or I will have c-section? Please help.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
This condition of baby placenta downward side is medically known as Placenta Previa. In this case, you need extra rest, avoid exertion and follow complete abstinence. In 70 % of such cases, placenta gradually moves upward as pregnancy advances if it is not complete Placenta Previa. You cannot do anything about it, and you need to stay calm as well as take good rest. Your doctor should regularly monitor the position of placenta throughout the pregnancy.
Some complications of low placenta include:
    - Preterm labor,
    - Antepartum hemorrhage ( any bleeding after 20 week )
    - Excessive bleeding during labor
    - Fetal distress which could lead to delivery through c-section

The position of placenta in your case is 35 mm and if you do not have a history of bleeding from vagina then do not worry much. Chances of normal delivery are very much there unless you have excessive hemorrhage during pregnancy.

    • Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
You have good chance of having normal delivery. You should do normal physical activity, walk daily but avoid exertion. As far as exercises are concerned you have to be cautious due to low placenta and take advice of treating doctor. Do not worry and relax. Reach upto at least 36 weeks safely without any episode of bleeding.

Hello mam. Sorry i m distrubing u again. U said me to reach upto 36 week. Can u tell me is 36 week is a starting of 9 month or end of 9 month. My LMP is 6.2.2015. And according to me 6.9.2015 i m on my 8month. Plz tel me the weeks system.
    • Hello Dear,

No problem at all. Please feel free to ask questions.
The unborn baby spends around 38 weeks in the womb, but the average length of pregnancy (gestation) is counted as 40 weeks. This is because pregnancy is counted from the first day of the woman’s last period, not the date of conception, which generally occurs two weeks later.
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters:
First trimester – conception to 12 weeks
      Second trimester – 12 to 24 weeks
      Third trimester – 24 to 40 weeks

So answer to your query is 36 weeks is start of 9th month.

Hello mam. According to my LMP my 8th month starts from today. Is it safe if my delivery come by 16 oct? As according to weeks, my 36week starts on 16oct. Please tell me the precautions to be taken in the 8th month as per my last conversation.

    Thanks
    • Hello Dear,

If your placenta on ultrasound is not covering and is low lying, then you have chances of normal delivery unless you develop bleeding from vagina. As per your LMP, your expected date of delivery is 13th November 2015.
If you have any high risk then you can be delivered early but if everything goes fine, wait at least upto 39 weeks complete.
As precautions, avoid sex, heavy work or exertion, avoid travelling , avoid constipation and keep some walk regularly unless you have bleeding history.
