Third Trimester, Low Hemoglobin, Can’t take iron supplements. Please suggest.

I am in 7th months of pregnancy. I can’t take iron tablets or syrup as i suffer from nausea and if not that then loose motions whenever i take iron. But i am taking iron rich food. Is it sufficient? My hemoglobin last month came to 9.3?  What are the repercussions of all this ? Please help.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
Iron when taken after meals causes less gastric upset. But if you are not tolerating, ask your doctor to change the preparation as certain iron preparations are available which cause less upset. If still intolerant, as your Hb is low, you need some extra along with diet.
Injectable iron preparations are available as single dose or multiple doses. Discuss with your gynaecologist and decide. Anaemia worsens in pregnancy and delivery and should be taken care of. If you do not correct it in time, you will be at risk of developing severe anaemia in delivery and PPH as well as at risk of blood transfusion in acute blood loss.
Your Hb should be maintained around 11 gm/ dl.
Get Hb electrophoresis done to rule out causes other than nutritional deficiency.
Add folic acid and vitamin B12 also in your supplements. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption from diet and other sources, should be included in diet or as tablets.
Hope this answers your query. Feel free to write back to us with follow-up questions.
