Is it necessary to consult doctor when planning pregnancy?

We are planning pregnancy next year. Is it necessary to consult doctor for prenatal care or

can I start taking folic acid on my own. I have done some search on internet and

found that 400 mg should be taken. Please suggest.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
If you have no issues regarding irregular periods or infertility or any known medical disorder, plan your pregnancy and start tab folic acid 5mg one daily from 1 month preconception at least. Maximum chances of conception are when you have intercourse around the ovulation which occurs in middle of your menstrual cycle if 28 days. If you do not conceive in 3 months or have any issues you should visit your doctor. Though preconception counselling and visit to doctor should be done to get yourself checked for any disorders and routine tests like Hb, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, thyroid and viral markers. Certain things need to be in order if you want to plan your pregnancy at ideal time.

Good nutrition along with antioxidants should be taken. High protein diet like legumes and grain, green vegetables, fruits rich in vitamin A and c, and exercise daily for 30 to 45 min for better fertility. Supplements with antioxidants like vitamin A ,C, E, zinc and selenium can be taken.
