Doctor drained amniotic fluid, What does it mean?

Hello Doctor, My doctor just drained around 650 ml of amniotic fluid as I’m fighting with polyhydramnios. They just inject a needle and removed excessive fluid from uterus. Can you tell how it can help me and my baby? As I know the level will come up again,so do I need to do another Amnioreduction again? I’m 34 weeks right now. Please guide.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
Polyhydramnios has been defined as an amniotic fluid index(AFI) >25 cm, maximal vertical pocket (MVP) 8 cm, or the visual assessment of increased amniotic fluid volume by a sonographer. Typical symptoms of polyhydramnios include maternal dyspnea, preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), abnormal fetal presentation, cord prolapse and postpartum hemorrhage.
To prevent the above complications, there are two methods of prenatal treatment: amnioreduction and pharmacological treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The amnioreduction is usually concluded when ultrasound examination shows an AFI of 15 to 20 cm or if intra-amniotic pressure drops to < 20 mmHg.
Hope this answers your query. Feel free to write back to us with follow-up questions.
