    One of your first tasks should be to set up an appointment about 3 to 6 months before you plan to conceive. At that visit, your doctor will:
    Order an A1C test to find out if your diabetes is controlled well enough for you to stop using birth control. Test your blood and urine for diabetes-related kidney complications. Look for other problems linked with diabetes,  Preconception counselling regarding your weight, lifestyle and your meal planning.

    You need to manage your diet carefully and maintain regular exercise routine. Don't drink alcohol, as it can make your blood sugar levels rise and fall rapidly. If you are overweight and have a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or higher, losing weight before you conceive will reduce the risk of complications in pregnancy. It is especially important that you take a folic acid supplement if you have diabetes and are trying for a baby.
