Can baby have down syndrome?

Doctor said my unborn baby has duodenal atresia. Triple Mark Test was clear and according to that baby is as normal. I have too much amniotic fluid and baby also has shown Double Bubble sign. Doctor said everything is normal except small bowel problem. I refused to take amnio test. Should I worry that my child can have down syndrome? Please guide.Thanks.

  1. Hello Dear,

Thank you for writing to us at MediMetry.
Duodenal atresia is usually associated with excess liquor and down syndrome also. If your ultrasound shows only Duodenal atresia and no other abnormal marker and triple test is normal, amniocentesis is the test which can aid to diagnosis.
If you do not want to go for it, get fetal echo done with high level scan by expert around 24 weeks. If it's also normal, it's isolated Duodenal atresia mostly and your baby will need NICU care after delivery and corrective surgery immediately.

Right now I'm 29 weeks pregnant..what can I do? And duodenal atresia surgery will be harmful to my baby in future? Or is there any chance of any complication further?
    • Hello Dear,

You should consult a paediatric surgeon or neo-natologist for correct prognosis and implications. Usually surgery has good results in expert hands.
