Colic is a condition of continuous crying in infants and is usually observed because of abdominal pain. Though it is a very common condition and has been observed in 20% of infants during the early months.
Crying is usually continuous, loud and could last from 1 to 4 hours. The baby's face often gets red as a result of crying. The belly is sometimes swollen or prominent; the feet are repeatedly cold and the hands clenched.
Causes of Colic Pain
- Tummy trouble, possibly a problem with the cow's milk or lactose in some formula
- Acid reflux, a developing nervous system or growing digestive system with muscles that often leads to painful spasms
- Gas or hormones that cause stomachaches, a moody newborn baby
Based on your baby's needs, try some calming methods-
If you're breastfeeding, avoid foods (such as caffeine, certain vegetables). If your baby is spitting up, keep him or her straight after feeding. Take your baby for a ride. Try body massage. Put a warm water bottle on your baby's belly. Use anti-reflux medicines and anti-gas drops.Try giving "gripe water” to your baby.

Retinopathy of prematurity or ROP is a disease of the eye that largely affects prematurely born infants who have been exposed to oxygen therapy. The oxygen therapy is used for treatment of premature development of baby’s lungs and for those infants who are weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or are born before 31 weeks of pregnancy. This causes development of abnormal blood vessels in the retina which causes enlargement and may lead to detachment of retina from back side of the eye, resulting in blindness. This usually develops in both the eyes.
Symptoms of ROP
Irregular eye ball movements, weak near sightedness, crossed eyes and at times white looking pupils.
Stages of ROP
Timely treatment can improve a baby’s chances of normal vision. Laser therapy or cryotherapies are advised to prevent chances of complex ROP, but it has to be done before the retina detaches. If the retina has detached, surgery (scleral buckling or vitrectomy) becomes necessary.
Since some vision loss and problems may arise in future, each baby who has had ROP surgery should visit regularly for eye checkups even in adulthood.

The first year of baby’s life is critical time for every parent to pay extra attention. Yes, you definitely can!
It is recommended for mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants for first six months to attain natural growth, development and health. But, when your colicky baby cries for long hours, you just want to ease your little one. Gripe water is commonly suggested for quick relief. Let’s find out what it is and how it works?
What is Gripe water?
It is a liquid for infants with colic, gastrointestinal discomfort, reflux, teething pain, or other stomach ailments. Its ingredients differ, and may comprise alcohol, sodium bicarbonate, ginger, dill seed oil, fennel and chamomile. But today alcohol free gripe water is also available. The ingredients in gripe water neutralize the excess acid in the stomach and break down the trapped air bubbles; thereby relieving your baby of stomach trouble.
Is it baby friendly?
A month old baby can be given gripe water up to six times in a day (24 hours). However, it’s not safe for month old babies or babies prone to allergic reactions. Since every baby’s body reacts in a different way, so do consult your doctor before administering gripe water. Though it doesn't have any evident side-effects, but if your baby gets some unusual symptoms, immediately take him/her to the doctor.
How do I give it to my baby?
The best time to give it to your baby is during, or immediately after a feed, as at this time baby’s digestive system will break down the bulky enzymes in milk, which may be the underlying cause for colic. Fill the dropper with the suggested dose to let your baby suck it or you can also squeeze few drops into baby’s mouth. Another way of administering gripe water is to add few drops to their feed.
Gripe water comes under various brands like Woodward’s, Dentin ox, Dabur, Infacol and Colief. Most importantly; whatever brand you use, do not use gripe water for more than 14 days of opening it and make sure you dispose it off properly.

Sticky eye is the consequence of a blocked tear duct. In this, your little one may get a white or yellow colored discharge at the corners of the eyes. Sticky eye generally appears within the first 24 hours after birth. Sometimes, due to heavy discharge the baby’s eyes can appear ‘glued’ shut. Generally, sticky eye is not a serious problem and can be treated at home. But, baby’s eyes are so tender, you should not take any risk, it might be a bacterial eye infection and may need medical treatment. Please note that Sticky Eyes is not Conjunctivitis.
Causes of sticky eye
A baby get sticky eye when a tear duct is blocked, due to amniotic fluid or skin cells. Because of that sticky discharge eyelids stick together.
Sticky eye condition cannot be prevented as it occurs when your baby is born with a blocked tear duct. Generally, tear ducts open up and start draining within the first few months after birth. If it doesn’t open naturally, then it is opened by doctor with a fine probe under anesthesia after the age of one year.
Mostly, sticky eye can be treated at home. Take cotton dampened in saline solution, and then gently wipe your child’s eye from the inner corner to the outer one. Use a fresh cotton ball for each wipe. If you have bathed the eye open, dry it through a dry cotton ball. Repeat this process each time when you feed your baby. Sticky eye caused by bacteria will be treated with antibiotic eye drops only so it is advised to consult your doctor before starting any home treatment.
If baby’s sticky eye gets worse with home treatment, take the baby to the doctor, as this could be a sign of bacterial infection.
