On the occasion of World Breastfeeding week being observed worldwide, MediMetry brings expert tips on nursing basics and why breastfeeding is important for healthy growth of your baby.
The “World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA)” has declared theme for this year’s breastfeeding week to be: “Breastfeeding and Work: Let us make it Work”! This theme reiterates the importance of breastfeeding by putting additional importance on work-life balance for a new mom!
It is recommended by doctors all around the world that you should breastfeed your baby for atleast first 6 months, helping your baby build a strong base for healthy living. Let us look at some advantages of breastfeeding:
In addition to the above listed factors, nursing helps build a strong emotional bond too between the mother and the child.
The immunity factor
Nursing is beneficial for the mother too, how? Let’s explore:
All said and done, breastfeeding is indeed a beneficial activity for the infant and the mother. Full support should be provided for helping the mother in doing so; but the mother’s should also be careful and should consult their doctors before starting breastfeed. If you are suffering from HIV or tuberculosis, your doctor would certainly recommend against it to avoid transferring the infection. If you are facing trouble with nursing, you should certainly get in touch with the lactation consultant.
Wishing new mothers and prospective mothers a happy world breastfeeding week! Let us share the benefits of nursing and spread the word!

The nine months wait is over and the baby is finally here!
It is indeed the longest and most anxious wait in a women’s life turning her towards a new overwhelming as well as demanding relationship of motherhood. During your pregnancy you faced emotional, and physical changes in yourself, the same is applicable to the post delivery phase. It is equally crucial as the pregnancy phase. It takes time and profound energy to get adjusted to the new member in the family with everything revolving around the baby and least attention towards the mother. This is not intentional but rather situational.
The negligence towards mother’s health during this phase could lead to long term problems for the mother. If you are prepared well in advance about the challenges you might face, it would help you and your family address those better. Let us look at some of the common postpartum challenges :
Post delivery, a woman is susceptible to infections in uterine, bladder, and kidney. Symptoms such as high fever, swollen uterus, pain in lower back, painful urination, etc. should not be ignored and a doctor should be consulted immediately.
A woman’s body goes through a lot of physical and emotional pressure during and post pregnancy phases. The postpartum depression usually comes with poor rest, stress and the pressure of enhanced responsibilities. This is further worsened by the abnormal sleep cycles, and unfulfilled demands of the body. This situation can be saved if the new mother gets full emotional support from the family. But if the depression brings lack of interest in your baby and your new life then it is better to consult a psychologist, though the best way is to communicate better with your partner and relieve yourself from the stress.
It is quite common to have pain in the perineum area if the delivery has happened through vagina. The perineum is the area between rectum and vagina. It is possible that during the delivery process, some tissues might have got ruptured leading to the pain in the area. This discomfort should gradually reduce with time but one should take special care to avoid any further rupture. Doctors recommend, sitting on a doughnut shaped pillow, doing kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles, and ensuring good hygiene.
If the pain is still there after few weeks from delivery, it is recommended to consult your doctor.
The delivery process can weaken your pelvic muscles leading to shifting of bladder, uterus or bowel. If you feel urinary incontinence, and heaviness in the vaginal area, then you should inform the doctor. Doctors recommend to get started with kegel exercises at first and then try other medications for curing this over a period of time.
The pushing activity during the delivery process can cause enlarged veins and these veins are medically termed as Hemorrhoids. It can further get worsened due to constipation postpartum. Doctors recommend avoiding any iron supplements in this situation as iron supplements enhance the chances of constipation. These hemorrhoids go away on their own in a few weeks time but if you observe itchiness and purplish or enlarged veins then report it to the doctor.
The vaginal bleeding happens as the uterus goes back to its original shape while releasing blood and remains of placenta; initial days you could observe blood clots as well. The bleeding should reduce in few weeks time and if it does not, you should consult your doctor.
The excess weight gained during the pregnancy worries some expectant mothers. Exercise is the most recommended activity to lose this extra weight. Proper exercises not only help you lose this weight but also help you strengthen the muscles in your body which went through enormous pressure during the delivery process.
Most women enjoy having good hair as they enter the phase of pregnancy, the hair usually get better during the pregnancy phase too owing to the hormonal activity in the body. But post delivery, some of you might observe hair loss. You should not get yourself too much worried over this. It is just a phase and would gradually pass too!
You should not delay and consult a doctor if you observe following symptoms:
- Excessive bleeding
- Excessive pain in the perineal area
- High fever
- Pain and swelling legs
- Chest pain
- Pain while urinating
- Depression and losing interest in your baby
Being a new mother you should be observant about the changes in your body as well as the emotional changes. Family should provide as much support as possible to a new mother in getting adjusted to the changes in her life.

Children below 6 years should be supervised while brushing and should be allowed to use only a pea-sized amount. Are you wondering why? Have you ever noticed a warning on your toothpaste – “Children below 6 years should use only a pea-sized amount and should be supervised.”
This is because your toothpaste contains very harmful ingredients such as toxins, rat poison, or even engine degreaser. Regular usage of these products could lead to health problems such as cancer, blindness, organ failure, or infections. These harmful ingredients are commonly present in your regular dental hygiene products. You would be amazed to find these in many branded products too!!
Some of the toxins found commonly include hydrated silica, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulphate, or sodium fluoride. These toxic products contain small sized molecules which could enter the blood stream and enter the heart, lungs, liver, kidney and even tissues.
Let us look at the effects these toxins could have on your children if consumed in more than required amount:
Sodium Fluoride is an ingredient present in rat poison and one of the most common ingredients in your toothpaste too! The fluoride content in toothpaste could kill a child within 24 hours, if consumed in excess quantity. So first and the foremost thing you should do is to keep these items away from kids and only administer the amount required for brushing.
No wonder that fluoride is part of the toothpastes, most of the dentists even today recommend fluoride to be an important constituent to help avoid cavities. Watch out for the sodium fluoride content and its consumption to avoid medical problems in kids and elders too!
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS is a very harmful ingredient. This is considered to be one of the most dangerous toxins found in the dental hygiene products. It has foaming property to generate foam, but it has corrosive effect on skin tissues. This chemical is used in the cleaning industry to do effective cleaning of the product. It can affect the eyes, brain, liver and heart. It also impedes hair growth.
Triclosan has antibacterial properties and is used in washing powders for the same reason. This category of toxins can cause cancer and also lead to skin irritations. Excessive accumulation of these toxins could lead to weakening of the immune system and cause hormonal problems.
Hydrated Silica acts as an abrasive agent in the toothpaste, though excessive scratching of teeth could lead to harmful effects on teeth enamel. This also affects the re-mineralization of teeth. This could eventually lead to wearing down of the teeth. Excessive usage of this chemical could cause gum problems and tooth decay.
Are you worried and shocked after reading this article? Do not worry! Rather start using dental products which do not use these chemicals and avoid any health problems in future or atleast ensure the product is consumed in required amount only.
If you have not checked the ingredients yet, you should do now and be observant about these harmful ingredients the next time you buy dental hygiene product! And save yourself from bringing home the medical problems unknowingly!!

The infancy and toddler years of a child are most important and crucial years of growth as well as nurturing for a child. The initial 5 years require love and affection from both parents as well as all the other members of the family.
It is commonly said that children behave and learn by observing the actions of people around them. So it becomes critical for everyone in the family to behave appropriately as well as to preach values by action for the child to learn and grasp. As they say, Learning begins at home!
This article highlights 5 parenting tips or rather secret ingredients for raising a well-nurtured and well-behaved child.
It happens quite often that parents end up lying either to the kids or amongst themselves unknowing of the fact that kids are observing the parents 24*7. A lie could be as simple as asking them to say they are not at home when someone rings for them. Every kid observes their parents and every member in the family very minutely, so parents should be very careful and avoid any lying whether for good or bad atleast in front of them. If parents lie in front of the kids but they preach their kids to be truthful, it will not be imbibed as an inherent value in their characteristic.
Fighting and arguing in front of kids should be avoided, but if it needs to be done, it should be done in a very respectful manner; otherwise it may lead to psychological problems in kids. It is quite common to observe the difference in kids of divorced parents or unstable families. The kids should be taught to empathize and not to fight. Even the arguing process should be taught such that it is done respectfully.
It happens more than often that kids are pampered by elders of the house and they are given everything they demand. This could gradually lead to bad habits in kids. So it is important to SAY NO to them when they are over-demanding. It could be as simple as telling them to not buy another toy car since they have so many at home. This would also help the kids to understand the value of toys they own. It will solve dual purpose of teaching them to empathize and share by asking them to donate or give away their toys to someone who needs them more than they do such as at an orphanage
Though this age of 3-5 years is quite early for a kid to learn the meaning of respect, but it is critical that kids are taught to respect at this age itself. This would not only help them turn into fine individuals once they grow up but will also get you accolades for being such fine parents. This habit could be cultivated by teaching them to say good morning to every member of the house when they get up and say good night when they are off to sleep, further to this they should be taught to say namastey when someone visits the house. Gradually this will become a habit and part of their lifestyle.
It is important to be patient with kids in their toddler years as these are the years of shaping up the future characteristics and inherent qualities in a kid. Parents should spend valuable time with their kids; participate in teaching them the best values as well as creating an example by following those values themselves. Happy Parenting!

The choice to breastfeeding is a personal one. If you believe the time is right to wean your baby, then it is. Only a mother can and should make this decision.
Usually doctors and pediatricians recommend breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months, then slowly starting with semi solid foods along with breastfeed for at least to age of one and after that continue breastfeed for as long as Mom and baby both wish for. Some studies suggest that within 6 months a baby's digestive system gets enough time to mature. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least two years.
Don't rush into weaning your baby.
First you should keep an eye on your baby that if your baby is showing some signs to move from breastfeeding to wean. If your baby stays in a sitting position and are able to hold their head stable. And if your baby could make a proper co-ordination between the eyes, hands and mouth, can look at food, grab it, and put it in the mouth.
You should be particular and careful about starting weaning only after completion of your baby's fourth month. Also never put solids in your baby's bottle.

Bottles are a principal part of a baby's nourishment/feeding during the first year of life, so make sure your baby's bottles are cleaned properly each time. Sometimes washing of bottle is taken for granted. But, appropriate cleaning of baby bottles is very important, as immune system of an infant is not completely developed and is susceptible to the bacterial infection from dirty bottles.
Cleaning bottles: All Bottle parts and equipment used for preparing a feed should be thoroughly cleaned as soon as possible before and after each use. Wash the bottle, teat and lid with hot soapy water. Use a brush to clean out any dried milk jammed inside the bottle parts. After cleaning, rinse with some fresh water and let it to air dry.
Sterilising bottles: Sterilising is the process of killing harmful germs present on the surfaces of the bottles. The sterilization of bottles should be continued for at least the first 12 months.
There are various methods to sterilise your baby’s bottles:

Doctor’s recommend mother’s feed for first 6 months, and then gradually start building habit of bottle feeding. But there could be many circumstances leading to your inability to breastfeed your infant, so formula feed is the alternative. Initially it may be an emotionally tiresome task requiring utmost patience. But relax, it is not rocket science and gradually your baby will adapt to formula feed.
Some quick tricks from the experts:
It is a myth that formula fed babies do not connect emotionally with their mothers, when compared to breast fed babies. Ensure you spend enough time with your baby to build the emotional connection, it is not the breast feeding but the valuable time you spend while feeding your baby.

Colic is a condition of continuous crying in infants and is usually observed because of abdominal pain. Though it is a very common condition and has been observed in 20% of infants during the early months.
Crying is usually continuous, loud and could last from 1 to 4 hours. The baby's face often gets red as a result of crying. The belly is sometimes swollen or prominent; the feet are repeatedly cold and the hands clenched.
Causes of Colic Pain
- Tummy trouble, possibly a problem with the cow's milk or lactose in some formula
- Acid reflux, a developing nervous system or growing digestive system with muscles that often leads to painful spasms
- Gas or hormones that cause stomachaches, a moody newborn baby
Based on your baby's needs, try some calming methods-
If you're breastfeeding, avoid foods (such as caffeine, certain vegetables). If your baby is spitting up, keep him or her straight after feeding. Take your baby for a ride. Try body massage. Put a warm water bottle on your baby's belly. Use anti-reflux medicines and anti-gas drops.Try giving "gripe water” to your baby.

Retinopathy of prematurity or ROP is a disease of the eye that largely affects prematurely born infants who have been exposed to oxygen therapy. The oxygen therapy is used for treatment of premature development of baby’s lungs and for those infants who are weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or are born before 31 weeks of pregnancy. This causes development of abnormal blood vessels in the retina which causes enlargement and may lead to detachment of retina from back side of the eye, resulting in blindness. This usually develops in both the eyes.
Symptoms of ROP
Irregular eye ball movements, weak near sightedness, crossed eyes and at times white looking pupils.
Stages of ROP
Timely treatment can improve a baby’s chances of normal vision. Laser therapy or cryotherapies are advised to prevent chances of complex ROP, but it has to be done before the retina detaches. If the retina has detached, surgery (scleral buckling or vitrectomy) becomes necessary.
Since some vision loss and problems may arise in future, each baby who has had ROP surgery should visit regularly for eye checkups even in adulthood.

Cracked nipples always happen because your baby isn't latching on well. If your baby can't take enough mouthful of breast tissue, your nipple may become compressed between baby's tongue and hard palate. This will make your nipples sore, cracked and may bleed. Moreover, having very dry skin or eczema, irritants in a cream, lotion, soap or perfume, washing detergent left on your clothes can also origin cracked, sore and bleeding nipples.
Some home remedies are:-
1. Breast Milk:- Breast milk has antibacterial and healing properties that help treat sore nipples. Apply a small amount of breast milk on the affected nipple before and after breastfeeding.
2. Warm Compress:- The heat from the compress can help in discomfort and help healing.
3. Oil Massage:- Sore nipples can also be treated by massaging with oils like olive oil, coconut or sweet almond oil. The moisturizing property of these oils will reduce dryness and will reduce the trouble of cracks, tears or chapping.
4. Aloe Vera:- It has natural healing powers as well as pain-relieving properties. Apply this fresh gel on the affected areas and allow it to dry on its own.
5. Basil Leaves:- Wash some basil leaves and grind them into a paste. Apply this paste on top of the nipples and allow it to air dry. Wash off the paste before feeding your baby.
