Nursing is beneficial for the mother too, how? Let’s explore:
All said and done, breastfeeding is indeed a beneficial activity for the infant and the mother. Full support should be provided for helping the mother in doing so; but the mother’s should also be careful and should consult their doctors before starting breastfeed. If you are suffering from HIV or tuberculosis, your doctor would certainly recommend against it to avoid transferring the infection. If you are facing trouble with nursing, you should certainly get in touch with the lactation consultant.

Bottles are a principal part of a baby's nourishment/feeding during the first year of life, so make sure your baby's bottles are cleaned properly each time. Sometimes washing of bottle is taken for granted. But, appropriate cleaning of baby bottles is very important, as immune system of an infant is not completely developed and is susceptible to the bacterial infection from dirty bottles.
Cleaning bottles: All Bottle parts and equipment used for preparing a feed should be thoroughly cleaned as soon as possible before and after each use. Wash the bottle, teat and lid with hot soapy water. Use a brush to clean out any dried milk jammed inside the bottle parts. After cleaning, rinse with some fresh water and let it to air dry.
Sterilising bottles: Sterilising is the process of killing harmful germs present on the surfaces of the bottles. The sterilization of bottles should be continued for at least the first 12 months.
There are various methods to sterilise your baby’s bottles:

Doctor’s recommend mother’s feed for first 6 months, and then gradually start building habit of bottle feeding. But there could be many circumstances leading to your inability to breastfeed your infant, so formula feed is the alternative. Initially it may be an emotionally tiresome task requiring utmost patience. But relax, it is not rocket science and gradually your baby will adapt to formula feed.
Some quick tricks from the experts:
It is a myth that formula fed babies do not connect emotionally with their mothers, when compared to breast fed babies. Ensure you spend enough time with your baby to build the emotional connection, it is not the breast feeding but the valuable time you spend while feeding your baby.

Colic is a condition of continuous crying in infants and is usually observed because of abdominal pain. Though it is a very common condition and has been observed in 20% of infants during the early months.
Crying is usually continuous, loud and could last from 1 to 4 hours. The baby's face often gets red as a result of crying. The belly is sometimes swollen or prominent; the feet are repeatedly cold and the hands clenched.
Causes of Colic Pain
- Tummy trouble, possibly a problem with the cow's milk or lactose in some formula
- Acid reflux, a developing nervous system or growing digestive system with muscles that often leads to painful spasms
- Gas or hormones that cause stomachaches, a moody newborn baby
Based on your baby's needs, try some calming methods-
If you're breastfeeding, avoid foods (such as caffeine, certain vegetables). If your baby is spitting up, keep him or her straight after feeding. Take your baby for a ride. Try body massage. Put a warm water bottle on your baby's belly. Use anti-reflux medicines and anti-gas drops.Try giving "gripe water” to your baby.

Retinopathy of prematurity or ROP is a disease of the eye that largely affects prematurely born infants who have been exposed to oxygen therapy. The oxygen therapy is used for treatment of premature development of baby’s lungs and for those infants who are weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or are born before 31 weeks of pregnancy. This causes development of abnormal blood vessels in the retina which causes enlargement and may lead to detachment of retina from back side of the eye, resulting in blindness. This usually develops in both the eyes.
Symptoms of ROP
Irregular eye ball movements, weak near sightedness, crossed eyes and at times white looking pupils.
Stages of ROP
Timely treatment can improve a baby’s chances of normal vision. Laser therapy or cryotherapies are advised to prevent chances of complex ROP, but it has to be done before the retina detaches. If the retina has detached, surgery (scleral buckling or vitrectomy) becomes necessary.
Since some vision loss and problems may arise in future, each baby who has had ROP surgery should visit regularly for eye checkups even in adulthood.

Thrush is an infection of the mouth observed usually in infants caused by a type of yeast known as Candida fungus. Thrush is not just limited to mouth; it can also cause diaper rash in infants or vaginal yeast infections in women. Body requires some amount of fungus which is controlled by immune system along with some "good" bacteria. If the immune system is extremely weak, or not yet fully functional which is usually the case in infants, Candida can have an overgrowth and ultimately lead to the infection known as, “Thrush”.
What are the Symptoms?
In the initial stages of oral thrush it may be difficult to diagnose; however, as time passes, the following symptoms may grow:
- Dry cracked skin at the corners of the mouth.
- White lesions on the tongue, cheeks, gums, or tonsils.
- A creamy, white material, slight bleeding on the surface of the lesions.
- Infants may face difficulty during feeding and may observe irritable behaviour.
Even though it is common in infancy, you can help prevent by taking the following preventive measures:
- Formula feeding or using pacifier? Clean the nipples and pacifiers in hot water after each use.
- Storing milk and prepared bottles in refrigerator prevents yeast from growing..
- Breastfeeding with sore and red nipples? May be you and the baby are passing it back & forth. Talk to your doctor for using an antifungal ointment while baby is treated with antifungal solution.
What is the Treatment?
Consult your doctor if you suppose your baby is experiencing above symptoms and might have thrush. The doctor will prescribe an oral antifungal treatment such as miconazole gel or nystatin suspension. Apply the gel to the infected part in your baby’s mouth. Maintain high level of sanitation and always clean your hands with anti-bacterial solutions after treating your baby. It may take a week of treatment of the infection.
Depending on your baby's age, doctor might suggest adding yoghurt with lactobacilli to your child's diet. The lactobacilli are the "good" bacteria that can hep eliminate yeast in your child's mouth.Doctor may recommend treatment for mother in case you are breastfeeding even though you may not have any symptoms. This will avoid passing the infection again to your baby when you breastfeed her.

Whooping Cough. Initially, it’s like a cold, but after one or two weeks, your baby may develop a severe hack, and a whooping sound. This is preventable with timely vaccine. If situation is under control, an antibiotic can help. Otherwise baby will need to stay in the hospital.
