What to drink during pregnancy?

You have discovered you are pregnant and your nutritionist has given a long list of what to eat and drink during pregnancy. Yes, you should abide by that list and always be careful about what you drink during pregnancy. Alcohol is completely out of question but you still have a long list of drinks to include in your daily life.

It goes without saying, that water is the primary liquid and an essential component of your daily routine.  So water does not require a special mention in the list of drinks as it has to be an integral part of your daily diet. You should drink lot of water when you are pregnant, atleast 3 litres of water every day. It is important to keep the body hydrated, keep yourself energised as well as fight the temperament and mood swings.

Apart from water, following are the health drinks which can be included in your diet plan:

  1. Smoothie

During pregnancy you need a composite and nutritious diet. Fruits and Milk provide for calcium, proteins and fibre needs of the body. Smoothie is a health drink formed by blending together fruit and milk. No need to add sugar, just enjoy the flavour of the fruit you love most. You could include bananas, strawberry, mango or chikoo or any other fruit you like. You should consumer only home-made smoothies.

  1. Mixed Fruit Juice

Some women do not like milk or have allergy with milk and milk products so for them the alternative is fresh juices made from mixed fruits.  This would ensure you get all the nutrients required by the body in this stage. You can explore different combinations by mixing together different fruits of your choice or can simply blend one type of fruit to make fruit juice of your choice. Let your creativity explore!

  1. Vegetable Juice

Vegetables are a great source of different types of vitamins and minerals in addition to the fibrous content. You should include a glass of vegetable juice in your daily routine or atleast once in two days to introduce variety in your diet. Also this would ensure your body gets of the necessary nutrition. You can try various combinations of vegetables and blend them to make the vegetable juice; though some common vegetable juice options include spinach & mint, carrot & gooseberry, tomato with bottle gourd and carrot.

  1. Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a very good drink which not only acts as a coolant but it helps in digestion and also helps to keep the body hydrated. For you all who do not recognise buttermilk, you might recall the common name for it, “chaas”. To ensure it is prepared correctly, you should include following ingredients and prepare your health drink: watered down curd,powdered form of spices like jeera ( cumin powder), adrak ( or ginger), kadi patta ( or curry leaves), dhaniya ( or coriander leaves, better go for fresh leaves), freshly cut green chilly and salt to taste.

  1. Coconut Water

Coconut water has been called as the wonder drink for pregnant women. That is not without any reason, because the coconut water has minerals which help keep the blood pressure under control. You should have this regularly especially in the final trimester.

  1. Lemonade

Looking for a refreshing drink, lemonade should be your choice. Just squeeze the lemon in water, add salt or sugar and to further add some flavour, add some mint leaves.

  1. Non-alcoholic Champagne

One of the dilemmas during pregnancy is avoiding alcohol while attending parties and social events. So to save yourself from an awkward situation, you can always ask for non-alcoholic champagne, just in case it is not available you can go for a mocktail of orange and grape juice.
