Tips to Massage Newborn Baby

Massage is a unique way to express your love and care for your baby. It has numerous benefits for your baby, including improving weight gain, aiding digestion, improving blood circulation and easing teething pain.

Learn how to massage newborn baby:

Tummy

Massage baby’s abdomen with your fingertips in a circular, clockwise motion.

“I Love U” stroke: Trace letter I down baby’s left side. Then trace an inverted L, stroking across belly along the base of ribs from baby’s right side to left and down. Trace an inverted U, stroking from low on right side, up and around the navel and then down left side.

Hold baby’s knees and feet together and gently press knees up toward abdomen.

Place hand on tummy horizontally and rock your hand from side to side.

Head and Face

Hold baby’s head in both hands; massage the scalp with your fingertips. Avoid the soft spot on top of baby’s head.

Massage ears within your thumb and index finger.

Trace a heart shape on your baby’s face, bringing hands together at chin.

With your thumbs, stroke gently out over baby’s closed eyelids.

Stroke out from the bridge of nose out over the cheeks.

Massage on jaw in small circles.

Chest

Position both hands on your baby’s chest and pat outward from baby’s sternum to shoulders.

In a crisscross pattern, stroke crossways from one side of your baby’s hip, up and over the opposite shoulder and back downward to baby’s hip.

Arms

Hold your baby’s wrist in one hand and hold another hand in a C-shape around baby’s upper arm; pat from baby’s shoulder down toward the wrist.

Massage palm by moving thumb over thumb from heel of baby’s hand to fingers.

Gently squeeze and pull each finger.

Massage wrist by moving your fingers in small circles.

Back

Place baby on tummy horizontally in front of you.

With both of your hands, move each hand back and forth (in opposite directions) from the base of the neck to buttocks.

Using your fingertips, massage in small circles down one side of baby’s spine and up the other.

Massage buttocks with big circular motions.

Legs

Lift one of baby’s legs by ankle and relax it by lightly tapping the upper thigh.

Grip baby’s ankle with one hand and hold your other hand in a C-shape, thumb down, around your baby’s upper thigh. Stroke from thigh down to foot.

On the sole of the foot, use a thumb-over-thumb movement to massage from heel to toes.

Gently squeeze and pull each toe.

Massage ankle in small circles.

Remember, make gentle and firm strokes.
