These painful spasms are very common among the pregnancy especially at night. Cramps usually start in the second trimester and last through the third trimester.

CAUSES:  While the exact origin of leg cramps during pregnancy is not clear, a range of theories blame fatigue from carrying pregnancy weight, density of the blood vessels in the legs, and possibly diet a surplus of phosphorus and a deficiency of calcium or magnesium

How can I avoid leg cramps?

  • Try to avoid sitting or standing with legs crossed for longer duration.
  • Stretch your calf muscles habitually during the day and repeatedly several times before you go to bed.
  • Turn around your ankles and twist your toes while you sit, eat dinner, or watch TV.
  • Go for a walk every day, unless your doctor has advised you not to exercise.
  • Avoid getting too tired. Lie down on your left side to recover circulation to and from your legs.
  • Drink water throughout the day frequently.
  • Try to take a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles.
